This place is pop-pin. I really love Louisiana. This morning we were walking through the streets of New Orleans just enjoying the scenery when all I could think of was how much I love this place.
Its just so crazy and so unreal the things that happen here which make it a must see. You don't know how many times I just think to myself "Am I really still in America?"
There's a famous store in New Orleans called Defend New Orleans. A pretty new little company which is pretty neat. They have cool stickers, cool quotes, some sweet clothing and a lot of cool pictures. There's one postcard that says this.
"Go There because it's Crazy, Borderline Dysfunctional, Permissive, Shabby, Alcoholic, and Crazy- and because it looks like nowhere else."
I don't think I have heard it better described any other way.. Its straight truth right there. Louisiana is crazy and that is what makes it so unique.
This past week has been filled with alot. Tuesday was district meeting and I started exchanges with Elder Quist the District Leader. Guess where I got sent back.. Marrero. Hahah It was the weirdest thing sleeping in the exact same bed, and exact same house of where I began my mission in Louisiana. It was a good few days and it was fun seeing all those people that I used to teach. They have all continued to progress just a little bit more. Tyrone, who Elder Peltzer and I began teaching is now coming to church every week to the point he gets up and bears his testimony on fast Sundays. So that is pretty cool to see.
Wednesday we had the food bank again and can I say that place just harness Louisiana in one little room. I don't think there has ever been a boring Wednesday. Last week, Tall Glass of Wata'.... Well this week is Lanyap.
Ok so I gotta explain for all them people back home. I'll paint a picture for y'all. Ok so We are in a small warehouse packing shopping carts full of food for the less fortunate. We have people of all ethnicity running around the room throwing little things here and there in the baskets. All of a sudden the lady behind you screams out "Heyyy Redddd, I need some Lanyapppp!"
I am so confused at this point.... "Lanyap...?"
She says "Yeah, gimme dat lanyap, I need me some lanyap in that bucket right derr!"
Ok well i finally figure out that one. Lanyap just means extra. It has french origin and apparently all the real Cajuns use it. I don't know how I have never heard it, but it tight, so it might stick.
Anyway, Gimme some lanyap.
Wednesday night we went and saw a less active in our area. His name is Bro Gonzalez. Well, here's the cool part. He lived in San Jose California for a good 20 years. He started talking and he got really pumped when i told him that's where I live. He started naming off all these streets and stuff and it was cool. Also there is another member in our branch that knows the Hills.. He also has been to San Jose. He said "Do you know a Sterling Hill??"
I thought that was pretty cool.. Its a small world!
Each Sunday we have 4 investigators at church so you could say things are going quite well. Its hard right now because their marriage situations are a little confusing with some people back home in their native countries so It's a little hard for them to continue to progress to baptism right now. But we are still trying. I love the people in the westbank... There are so many funny things that happen each week that I can't even start explaining.
Oh ok so there is this lady at church that I love. I don't know her name and you don't wan't to even know how many times I have asked her but she is hilarious. She has to be like 70 years old and some people refer to her as "The Voodoo Lady"
She always wears like a see-through shower cap to church and all black everything. Her nails are maybe 4 inches long. Well on Sunday she got up and started praying and no joke the opening prayer went for 13 minutes. I was so confused and half the branch didn't even know what to do. Not to mention that her eyes were open the whole time...
I love being a missionary and serving these people around me who I love so much! There's nothing better! The Gospel is true and I'm so grateful to have that knowledge.
A cool scripture just for some uplifting is Mosiah 2:41
And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are blessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true; for the Lord God hath spoken it.
Love y'all!!
